Australia is first nation in world to get a Commemorative IYC 2012 Coin
The IYC 2012 Secretariat started the process of lobbying for a coin to commemorate the International Year of Co-ops in Australia back in late 2010.
The 2012 $1 Uncirculated Coin – International Year of the Co-operatives will be released on 1 January 2012.
The Royal Australian Mint designed this commemorative coin in partnership with the Australian Secretariat.
The design incorporates the International Year of Co-operatives logo with additional building blocks representing the role that co-operatives play in sustaining populations that may otherwise struggle with the demands of a global economy.

Co-op’s Chief receives first coin
In front of an estimated audience of 2000 global co-operators, Capricorn Society Chair, Mr Colin Heavyside, will present Dame Pauline Green, President of the global peak body for co-ops, the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), with the first minted IYC 2012 coin. The presentation will take place on Friday 18 November at the co-operative movement’s launch of IYC 2012 in Cancun, Mexico (the ICA General Assembly).
Mr Heavyside said, “It will be a symbolic moment given Dame Pauline launched Social Business Australia at Parliament House in March 2010, and we have reached this milestone in less than two years – I feel very proud on behalf of Australian co-ops”.
